On March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake struck the northeastern region of Japan. The tsunami waves, as high as 133 feet, swept away many towns and villages along the coastline, and severely damaged the Fukushima nuclear plant. Approximately 20,000 people perished. I created this installation work as a tribute to the victims.
Hung from the ceiling with fishing line, the white plastic gaskets turn slightly as the wind blows. The spiral movement suggests an imaginary scene where the spirits of the deceased are ascending from the sea that swallowed them. The mound of salt on the floor and the mirror symbolizes purification of the souls.
