Portforlio Project:  Chance Operations

Enso

In this particular project, reducing myself to a mere instrument, I used calligraphy and statistical analysis.  Enso is a Japanese word meaning "circle" and a concept associated with Zen.  I relinquished my control over the outcome.  Instead of expressing my emotions, I intentionally suppressed them by letting chance dictate my next brush stroke.  I drew each circle after either clipping a coin or throwing dice.

Chance Weaving

I threw dice to formulate threading and treadling (i.e. loom pedaling) sequences.  The probability of each weaving pattern that I created is one in more than eight trillion.  Designing such a unique pattern would not be possible without chance operations.
